Mission Statement
The Yarrambat Historical Society Inc was formed in 1990 with the mission "To preserve and perpetuate the history of the area and to promote and encourage social interchange between people of all ages who share and interest in our cultural heritage"
Overview of Activities
The Society has published two books, namely "The Life and Experience of an Immigrant" by Otto Rupp and an updated version of the 1978 Yarrambat Centenary Year Book. The Society is engaged in the ongoing development of the Yarrambat Heritage Museum and new exhibits are planned. The Yarrambat Walk brochure, designed by the late Alan Sartori, is available from the Yarrambat Post Office and signs describing various sites of interest are in place. The Society enjoys close ties with the Yarrambat Primary School and sponsors the school Speeches where grade six students research and present historical subjects each year around the time of the school's birthday. The Society also produces photo boards which feature a photo and story of local families and identities. The Yarrambat Heritage Museum is by far the largest project undertaken by the Society. The Society took over the site in early 2001 and over the ensuing years has developed the site into an operational Heritage Museum.
A grant from the Victorian State Government enabled the relocation of the original 1878 Primary School classroom to the site in 2002. The Golden King Mine Battery was dismantled and rebuilt on site in 2002. Around this time a security fence, funded by the Nillumbik Shire Council, was erected around the Site. Restoration of the Len Young Woolshed was carried out during 2005-6. Work on all four buildings on site is ongoing.
